9-Day Egypt Tour: Cairo, Alexandria & White Desert

After breakfast, you travel to Giza for a guided visit to Giza's Pyramids. Your guide explains how the pyramid complex was planned and used, then leads you to the Great Pyramid, the Pyramid of Khafre and the Pyramid of Menkaure. On arrival, visit the museum of Goden Mummies, where the displays introduce burial traditions and the oasis discoveries associated with the area. Continue to the tombs of Bawiti, which preserve painted details and architectural features from the oasis necropolis.

Your guide then takes you to the temple of Alexander, linked with Alexander the Great and the oasis's ancient history. There is time for a break in Bawiti before the route moves into the desert. The drive changes from paved road to rougher tracks, and a local 4x4 is used for the desert section.

As the afternoon cools, cross the dark volcanic landscape of the Black Desert before reaching the camping area near the white limestone formations. Dinner is prepared at camp, and you spend the night in the desert. Facilities are simple, so bring a small overnight bag, warm layers and a torch.

After breakfast at camp, continue through the desert to The white desert. Wind erosion has shaped the pale limestone into forms that rise from the open gravel plain. Your 4x4 stops at several viewpoints, giving you time to walk a short distance, take photographs and hear how the landscape was formed.

In the afternoon, begin the drive back to Cairo. This is a long transfer after the night outdoors, with rest stops along the way. On arrival, check back into your Cairo accommodation and have the evening free to recover before the coastal excursion.

Travel from Cairo to Alexandria in the morning, then begin the day with Alexandria attractions along the Mediterranean coast. Visit the liberary of Alexandria, the modern cultural complex built near the site associated with the ancient Library of Alexandria. Set out from Cairo for Fayoum, travelling south-west through farmland and desert edges. The first stop is the Museum of Kom Aushim, where artefacts and portraits help explain daily life in the Fayoum region during the Greek and Roman periods. Continue to Karanis City, an ancient settlement with streets, houses and temple remains that show how farming communities lived beside the lake basin.
