Leave Cairo by road for Alexandria, a full-day excursion to Egypt’s Mediterranean coast. On arrival, visit the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, where underground chambers combine Egyptian, Greek and Roman burial traditions. Continue to the Roman-era Pompey’s Pillar area and hear how Alexandria grew into a major centre of learning and trade.

The route also takes in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina area and the seafront, with time for photographs and a break during the day. Alexandria’s coastal air and broad Corniche make a welcome contrast to Cairo, but the drive is long, so expect a substantial day on the road. Travel west from Cairo to Bahariya Oasis, a desert settlement surrounded by palms, low hills and spring-fed farmland. After arrival, have a break and visit the oasis area with your guide. The landscape changes noticeably during the drive, moving from the Nile Valley’s built-up districts to wide stretches of open desert.

Continue by four-wheel-drive vehicle towards The white desert, where wind-shaped chalk formations rise from the pale ground. Spend the day on the Red Sea coast in Hurghada. The schedule can be arranged around a boat outing, swimming, snorkelling or time on the beach, depending on sea conditions and the activity selected. There is no need to rush between activities. Bring swimwear, sun protection, a towel and a light layer for the boat ride if you choose one. Return to your accommodation in the afternoon, with the evening free for dinner and packing before the final transfer.
