Your day will begin with a visit to the Temple of Philae, dedicated to the goddess Isis. This temple, the last built in the classical Egyptian style, began construction around 690 BC and was one of the final sites where the goddess was worshipped.
Next, you'll explore Aswan High Dam, a rock-fill dam located on the border between Egypt and Sudan. The dam, which forms Lake Nasser, was completed in 1968 and officially inaugurated in 1971. It controls flooding, provides water for irrigation, and generates electricity for the region.
Then, head to the Unfinished Obelisk, located in Aswan’s northern quarries. This massive obelisk, which would have weighed 1168 tons if completed, provides fascinating insight into the techniques used by ancient Egyptians to carve these monumental structures. The Great Temple of Ramses II and the Temple of Queen Nefertari were carved out of the mountainside between 1274 and 1244 BCE. The Great Temple is dedicated to Ramses II, Ra-Harakhty, Amun Ra, and Ptah, and features four colossal statues of Ramses II. The second temple is dedicated to Queen Nefertari and the goddess Hathor. In an extraordinary engineering feat, both temples were dismantled stone by stone and relocated to higher ground to avoid submersion after the construction of the Aswan High Dam. The preservation of these temples remains one of UNESCO's most remarkable accomplishments.
After exploring the temples, you will return to Aswan for lunch. Following lunch, you will be transferred to the train station to board a first-class train to Luxor.
