Cairo and Nile Cruise Tour – 10 Days

After breakfast, travel to the Giza Pyramid Complex, where the pyramids rise above the modern edge of Cairo. Your guide explains how the royal burial landscape was planned, then leads you around the principal viewpoints for clear photographs and a closer look at the stonework. The Great Pyramid of Khufu is the largest of the three main pyramids; entry inside is optional and depends on ticket availability and your preference.

Continue to the plateau’s lower area to see The Majestic Sphinx, carved with a lion’s body and a royal head. From this position, you can appreciate its relationship to the nearby temple remains and the pyramid field behind it. Expect direct sun and some walking on sand, stone and gently sloping paths, so sturdy footwear is useful.

Return to Cairo after the visit with time for lunch independently or at a local restaurant, depending on the day’s arrangements. The afternoon remains free for rest.

Today focuses on Cairo’s ancient collections. Visit the Egyptian Museum, where Egypt Museum Treasures include royal jewellery, funerary objects, statues and objects recovered from the tomb of Tutankhamun. Your guide places the exhibits in context, helping you follow the story from the early dynasties through the New Kingdom rather than moving through the galleries without a plan.

Allow time to study the details that are easy to miss: painted coffin panels, carved hieroglyphs, small tools and the scale of the stone sculpture. Museum displays and access arrangements can change, so your guide will direct you to the galleries open during your visit and explain which areas deserve the most attention.

After the museum, continue through central Cairo for lunch or a short orientation drive. The rest of the day is free at the hotel. It is a useful pause before the early start and domestic travel involved in reaching Aswan.

Keep this day flexible in Cairo. After breakfast, you may spend the morning resting at the hotel, browsing local shops or arranging an additional city visit with our team. A relaxed schedule gives you time to recover from the previous sightseeing days and prepare for the move south.

If you choose to explore independently, allow extra time for Cairo traffic and agree on the return arrangements before leaving. Comfortable clothing, modest cover for religious sites and secure storage for passports and valuables are sensible choices. In the evening, pack a smaller overnight bag if preferred and keep your travel documents, medication and essentials with you. Your main luggage will continue with you, but having immediate access to the basics makes the airport transfer and cruise check-in easier.

After breakfast, transfer to Cairo airport for the flight south to Aswan. On arrival, our team meets you and continues to the Aswan Modern Dam, a major engineering project that changed the movement of water and silt along the Nile. Your guide explains its effect on agriculture, electricity and the relocation of several ancient sites.

Continue by boat to the island setting of the Philae Sacred Site. The temple complex was moved to higher ground to protect it from the rising waters created by the dam. As you walk through the gateways and columned halls, look for carved scenes of the gods and pharaohs. The short boat crossing adds a practical part to the visit; conditions and boat timing can affect the exact sequence.

Later, board your 5-star Nile cruise vessel and settle into your cabin. After lunch or check-in, take time to learn the ship’s layout and enjoy the first stretch of Nile River Sailing. The vessel becomes your base as the cruise begins its journey toward Luxor.

Today is reserved for the Abu Simbel Monuments, reached by a pre-arranged road excursion from Aswan. The journey takes time, but the scale of the temples makes the distance worthwhile. Your guide introduces the reign of Ramesses II and explains how the temples were relocated to higher ground during the modern construction of the dam.

At the site, begin with the temple facade and its four colossal seated figures before entering the decorated halls. Inside, reliefs show royal ceremonies, military victories and religious scenes. The smaller temple nearby honours Queen Nefertari and has its own detailed carvings. Allow time to walk between the temples, take photographs from the permitted areas and listen to the guide without rushing.

Return to Aswan and rejoin the cruise, following the day’s road journey with time to rest. Meals and the exact excursion sequence are arranged around the vessel’s sailing plan. Bring water, sun protection and comfortable shoes, as the open approach to the temples can be hot.

The cruise continues north after breakfast, giving you a slower morning on board. Watch the riverbanks change from cultivated fields to stretches of desert, with villages, palms and small working boats appearing along the route. Later, go ashore at the Kom Ombo Dual Temple, an unusual complex dedicated to two divine traditions. One side honours the falcon-headed Horus, while the other is associated with Sobek, the crocodile god. Your guide points out the symmetrical layout, medical instruments carved in relief and the temple’s connection with the river landscape.

Return to the vessel after the visit and continue sailing toward Edfu. The afternoon may include time on deck, a meal and views of rural Egypt. Walking is moderate at the temple, but the ancient paving is uneven in places, so take care on steps and worn stone.

After breakfast, travel from the riverbank to the Edfu Divine Temple, usually by a short local transfer arranged for the cruise group. Built for Horus, the temple is one of Egypt’s best-preserved large sanctuaries. Its entrance pylons, broad courtyard and roofed halls still show the original sequence of movement from public space into more restricted areas.

Walk with your guide through the inscriptions and reliefs, including scenes of the king presenting offerings to the gods. The explanations make the carved walls easier to read and show how the temple supported religious ceremonies. Begin at King's Valley, where tombs cut into the desert cliffs preserve painted scenes of the afterlife and royal rituals. Your entry includes the tombs open on the day; access to individual tombs can vary, and your guide will explain the available choices, including the tomb associated with Tutankhamun when permitted.

Continue to the Hatshepsut Mortuary Shrine, built in terraces beneath the cliffs. Its ramps, columns and surviving reliefs show how the queen presented her reign and divine lineage. Nearby, pause at the Memnon Stone Giants, two large seated statues that once guarded the entrance to a much larger temple.

Cross to the East Bank for the Karnak Sacred Complex. Walk through its pylons, courts and columned spaces, then continue to the Luxor Sanctuary, where evening light can bring out the detail in the reliefs. Transfer to your Luxor hotel after sightseeing and keep the evening free.
