Description

This 3-day Cairo and Luxor trip from Sahel Hashesh brings together Egypt’s major ancient sights with the quieter landscapes of the Fayoum oasis. Organised road transport links the Red Sea coast, Cairo, Fayoum and Luxor, while our team manages the route so you can concentrate on each visit instead of the logistics. The schedule is full, but it leaves time to see the main sites properly.

In Cairo, start at the Pyramids of Giza. Moving between the plateau viewpoints makes the scale of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure easier to grasp. The Sphinx is close by, carved from the limestone bedrock with a pharaoh’s face and a lion’s body. Your guide can explain the layout of the pyramid complex and draw attention to details that are easy to overlook without context.

The Egyptian Museum gives you another way to understand ancient Egypt. Its collection spans thousands of years and includes royal statues, funerary objects and everyday items recovered from temples and tombs. A guided visit helps you navigate the large collection without trying to see every display. Comfortable walking shoes are useful, as the museum follows Cairo’s outdoor sightseeing.

  • See the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx with a guide.
  • Explore the Fayoum oasis, Wadi El Rayan and Magic Lake.
  • Visit Wadi el Hitan, known for its preserved whale fossils.
  • Walk through the Valley of the Kings in Luxor.
  • See Hatshepsut temple, the Colossi of Memnon, Karnak temple and Luxor temple.

The Fayoum oasis gives the trip a different pace and setting. At Wadi El Rayan, desert slopes frame lakes and open viewpoints, while Magic Lake is known for its calm surroundings and changing colours in the light. Wadi el Hitan, the Valley of the Whales, contains fossil remains of ancient whales that lived in an earlier sea. The landscape is spare and open, making this part a good fit for travellers who want more than city monuments and museum rooms. Desert conditions can be sunny and dusty, and the visit includes uneven ground.

Luxor is the final major setting, with monuments on both banks of the Nile. In the Valley of the Kings, you enter selected royal tombs cut into the western cliffs. The number open can vary, and some tombs require an additional ticket. Hatshepsut temple rises against the rock face in broad terraces, while the Colossi of Memnon stand beside the road on the way to the ancient west-bank sites. Your guide connects the tombs, temples and river landscape.

On the east bank, Karnak temple is best seen at a slower pace, moving through its gateways, columns and courtyards. The Great Hypostyle Hall is one of the complex’s most memorable spaces, with rows of towering columns covered in carved decoration. Luxor temple has a more compact layout and is easy to read as a processional temple, with its avenue, pylons and statues arranged along the route. Seeing both temples with a guide places the Luxor visits in a clear historical sequence.

This excursion suits travellers who want to cover several regions in a short time and are comfortable with long road journeys, early starts and a busy sightseeing schedule. It is less suitable if you prefer a slow holiday in one place or find extended sitting and walking difficult. We use planned transfers and air-conditioned transport, while our team coordinates the route, sightseeing and accommodation so you do not have to arrange separate connections between Sahel Hashesh, Cairo, Fayoum and Luxor. Check meals, hotel arrangements and entrance details against the selected booking option before travel.

Bring a passport or valid identification for check-in, light clothing for daytime visits and a layer for cooler early-morning travel. Sun protection, water and shoes with firm soles will make the desert and archaeological sites more comfortable, particularly at Wadi el Hitan and the Valley of the Kings.

Your Itinerary

Our team collects you from Sahel Hasheesh for an early road transfer to Cairo. After the long drive, begin at the Pyramids of Giza, where your guide explains how the pyramids were built and points out the details travellers often miss from the main viewpoints. Continue to the Sphinx, set below the plateau, for time to see its carved limestone face and take photographs.

After lunch, visit the Egyptian Museum in central Cairo. The galleries contain statues, jewellery, coffins and other objects from several periods of ancient Egyptian history, so your guide can help you focus on the most important rooms rather than rushing through the collection. Later, leave Cairo's busy centre and settle in for the evening. The first day ends with an overnight stay in Cairo, ready for an early departure towards the desert landscapes of Fayoum.

Leave Cairo after breakfast and drive south to the Fayoum oasis, a greener region surrounded by desert. Continue towards Wadi El Rayan, known for its desert scenery and waterfalls, then travel onward by suitable desert vehicle to Wadi el Hitan. This open-air fossil area preserves the remains of ancient whales and helps explain how the landscape changed from a sea environment to the desert seen today.

The route continues to Magic Lake, where the water changes in colour with the light and surrounding conditions. There is time to take photographs and enjoy the quiet setting before leaving the protected desert areas. Expect uneven ground, sun exposure and a mixture of paved and unpaved travel, so comfortable shoes, water and sun protection are useful. In the late afternoon or evening, continue by road towards Luxor for the next day's sightseeing and overnight rest.

Begin your departure day on Luxor's West Bank at the Valley of the Kings. Walk into selected royal tombs, where painted scenes and hieroglyphs remain visible in the chambers. Continue to the Hatshepsut temple, built against the cliffs and arranged across broad terraces. Before crossing to the eastern side of the Nile, stop at the Colossi of Memnon, two large seated statues that once guarded the entrance to a vast temple complex.

After a break for lunch, visit Karnak temple, where the columns, courtyards and processional spaces show the scale of ancient Thebes. Finish at Luxor temple, especially atmospheric as the day cools, with its avenue, pylons and remaining statues close to the modern city. Once the Luxor visits are complete, begin the road transfer back to Sahel Hasheesh. It is a long return journey, so the day includes practical rest stops along the way.

The pace suits travellers who want to cover several destinations in one trip. Our team plans the route in a practical order, with time for guided visits and short breaks where the schedule allows.

Pickup is arranged from your accommodation area in Sahel Hashesh, followed by road transfers to Cairo, the Fayoum oasis and Luxor as set out in the itinerary. Your confirmed booking provides the pickup details and meeting point.

The trip can suit older children and active travellers, but it involves long road journeys, uneven ground, steps and walking across large archaeological sites. The Pyramids of Giza, Wadi el Hitan and the Valley of the Kings may be difficult for travellers with limited mobility.

Please tell us about mobility needs, medical considerations or a child’s age before booking. We can explain the walking involved and check which parts of the itinerary can be adjusted; full wheelchair access cannot be assumed at every site.

A small day bag is useful for documents, snacks and a phone charger. Conditions can change between the desert areas and city visits, so carry a light layer as well as sun protection.

Booking and cancellation conditions depend on the selected tour option and are shown before you confirm payment. You should review the cancellation deadline, amendment terms and any requirements for traveller details at that stage.
