Wadi El Hitan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site holding hundreds of fossilised whale skeletons — remnants of ancient whales that lived 40 million years ago when the Sahara Desert was a vast ocean. It is one of the world's most extraordinary palaeontological sites and is often called the Valley of the Whales.
October to April provides the most pleasant temperatures for exploring the desert and the oasis. Spring and autumn deliver agreeable weather and excellent birdwatching. Summer is possible but very hot; early morning and evening are the most comfortable periods.
