The Hamata Islands are a chain of coral islands in the far south of Egypt's Red Sea coast, within a protected nature reserve. They are celebrated for their untouched coral reefs, pristine mangrove forests, and rich marine biodiversity rarely seen at more tourist-developed sites.
The Hamata Islands are approximately 100 km south of Port Ghalib. The journey by speedboat takes around 1.5–2 hours each way. This makes for a full-day excursion, with early morning departure and return in the late afternoon.
The Hamata reefs are teeming with colourful reef fish, Napoleon wrasse, lionfish, moray eels, rays, sea turtles, and occasional dolphins. The mangrove channels also support juvenile fish and bird life. The visibility is typically excellent — over 20 metres.
Yes, a freshly prepared lunch is included on board the boat. The menu typically features grilled fish, rice, salad, and fresh fruit reflecting the flavours of the region. Soft drinks and water are provided throughout the day.
