Luxor to Aswan Nile River Cruise, 8 Days

Begin with a guided visit to the Karnak Temples, the vast temple complex on Luxor’s east bank. Your guide helps you read the site in sequence: the avenue of sphinxes, the monumental pylons, the Great Hypostyle Hall and the open courtyards. The scale is easier to appreciate with time to pause among the columns and hear how successive pharaohs expanded the complex.

Continue to Luxor Temple, where the remaining statues, colonnades and reliefs sit close to the modern city. After the east-bank visits, cross the Nile by road to the west bank. Here, the Valley of the Kings introduces the royal tombs cut into the desert hills, followed by Hatshepsut Temple and the Colossi of Memnon. Wear practical shoes and carry water; the ground is uneven, exposed and warmer than the shaded ship. Return to the vessel for lunch or rest before sailing south, depending on the day’s navigation plan.

Spend the morning on board as MS Le Fayan continues south along the Nile. This is a useful slower-paced part of the voyage: breakfast, time on the sun deck and views of cultivated riverbanks, villages and fields all unfold without another road transfer. Your guide can also answer questions about the locks, irrigation and the daily life of communities beside the river.

When the ship reaches Edfu, travel from the landing point to Edfu Temple for a guided visit. The temple is dedicated to Horus and is known for its large entrance pylon, substantial courtyard and well-preserved carved walls. The journey between the ship and the temple is arranged locally, and the guide keeps the visit moving at a comfortable pace while allowing time for photographs. Return to the vessel after the tour and continue sailing. The evening is spent on board, with dinner and views of the river as the ship heads towards the next stop.

The ship continues its southbound route after breakfast. Much of today is spent on the Nile, giving you time to enjoy the open deck, read, or watch the scenery change from farmland to drier stretches near the river. This unhurried sailing day also leaves room to speak with the guide about the temples and settlements you have already seen.

Depending on the vessel’s navigation schedule, the ship stops at Kom Ombo for a guided visit. The temple stands beside the river and has an unusual double design, with areas dedicated to Sobek and Horus. You can see carved halls, sanctuaries and the remains of later additions before returning to the ship. Shore visits may take place in warmer conditions, so bring a hat, water and light clothing. After the excursion, the cruise resumes towards Aswan. The ship usually spends the night in or near Aswan, ready for the following day’s visits.

Arrive in Aswan and leave the ship with your guide for a city tour that explains how the river is managed today. At The High Dam, you see the enormous structure that controls the Nile’s flow and created Lake Nasser. Continue to the granite quarries to see The Unfinished Obelisk. The abandoned monument remains connected to the bedrock, allowing you to examine the cracks that stopped the work and the marks left by ancient stoneworkers. The quarry surface can be uneven, with little shade, so comfortable shoes and sun protection are useful. Return to the ship for a meal and time to rest. Aswan is generally a gentler-paced stop than Luxor, and the afternoon may be left free for the sun deck or a quiet walk near the river, according to the ship’s schedule.

Take a short boat ride across the water to Philae Temple, built on an island and dedicated mainly to the goddess Isis. The approach by boat gives you a clear view of the pylons and waterfront terraces before you enter the complex. Inside, your guide points out the reliefs, columns and temple courts, as well as the story of how the monuments were relocated when the original island was threatened by rising water.

After the visit, return by boat and transfer back to MS Le Fayan. The remainder of the day is flexible. You may relax on board, enjoy the river views or ask our team about an optional local outing, depending on the operating schedule and your interests. Keep some space in your luggage if you plan to buy small handicrafts in Aswan. Overnight arrangements remain on the ship, with dinner and free time in the lounge or on deck.

Today brings a quieter view of Aswan and the river. After breakfast, board a traditional felucca for a sail around the islands and Nile shoreline. These simple wooden boats move with the wind, so the outing has a slower rhythm than the motorboat transfers used for some temple visits. The route and duration depend on wind and local sailing conditions, but there is time to sit back, photograph the landscape and see Aswan from the water.

Return to the cruise ship after the felucca experience and spend the rest of the day at your own pace. The sun deck is a good place to watch late-afternoon light on the river, while the lounge provides a cooler space when needed. This is the final night on board, so pack non-essential items before dinner and keep travel documents and valuables with you for departure the next morning.
