The Abu Simbel Temples are the furthest point on the route and the reason for the early start from Aswan. Ramses II built the larger temple, with four seated figures carved into its rock face. Inside, decorated halls lead towards the sanctuary, while the smaller temple honours Queen Nefertari. The site is open and exposed, so comfortable shoes, sun protection and water are useful. The drive takes time, but the temples’ scale and setting make this an important part of the trip.

Back in Aswan, you visit the High Dam, a major modern structure that changed control of the Nile and created Lake Nasser. You then reach Philae Temple by boat across the water when conditions and local arrangements allow. The temple complex was moved to Agilkia Island to protect it from the rising lake. Its courtyards, columns and reliefs make more sense with a guide explaining the relocation and later Roman additions.
