Description

This Giza Pyramids day tour from Cairo brings together Egypt’s best-known monuments and two major ancient sites south of the capital. With a private vehicle and guide, you visit the Giza Pyramids, The Sphinx, Sakkara and Memphis without arranging separate transfers or linking the sites yourself. The route follows the history of the Memphis area, starting with Giza’s great royal monuments before moving into the older pyramid landscape.

Your guide begins at the Giza plateau, where the pyramids rise above the edge of the modern city. You see the Pyramid of Khufu, the largest of the group, along with the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure. There is time to take in the monuments from the main viewpoints and hear how the complex was planned, built and used as a royal burial ground. If you want to enter one of the pyramids, tickets for the interior areas are usually separate and can be arranged subject to availability.

The Sphinx stands close to the lower temple of the Giza complex. Its lion’s body and human head were carved from the bedrock, and your guide explains the theories about its identity and original role. Approach the viewing area at an easy pace and the monument’s scale becomes clearer, with the pyramid plateau behind it rather than the Sphinx standing alone. The ground can be uneven, so comfortable shoes help.

After Giza, the tour continues to Sakkara, the principal cemetery of ancient Memphis. The Step Pyramid is the centrepiece. Built for King Djoser, it changed the design of royal tombs by stacking stone levels above a large underground complex. Sakkara is quieter and more spread out than Giza, with open desert paths between the monuments. The slower pace gives you time to look at the architecture and follow the development of pyramid building without rushing between viewpoints.

At Sakkara, you also visit the Mataba of Kagemni, more accurately known as the Mastaba of Kagemni. Its decorated reliefs depict daily life, animals and food production, giving the tomb a more personal character than the great royal pyramids. The Pyramid of King Teti is another important stop. Its outer structure is much less complete, but the burial chamber has pyramid texts carved into the walls, among the earliest religious inscriptions linked to a royal burial.

The final ancient site is Memphis, the first capital of unified ancient Egypt and a major centre of administration, religion and craftsmanship. At the open-air museum, you see the Alabaster sphinx and the Colossi of Ramses the second, a huge fallen limestone statue associated with the king. These remains give a sense of Memphis’s scale, when temples and royal buildings stood close to the Nile’s former course.

  • Private sightseeing with a dedicated vehicle and guide
  • Giza Pyramids and The Sphinx before Sakkara and Memphis
  • The Step Pyramid, the Mataba of Kagemni and the Pyramid of King Teti
  • The Alabaster sphinx and the Colossi of Ramses the second

We keep the day practical and flexible within the planned route. Our team arranges pickup and drop-off in Cairo or Giza, while your guide sets the order of visits and explains each site as you go. There is time for photographs, short breaks and questions, with most of the walking around the archaeological sites. A private tour suits travellers who want a focused day with their own guide, families who prefer a steadier pace and anyone with limited time in Cairo.

The tour involves walking across sandy or uneven ground, steps in some tomb areas and exposure to the sun, particularly at Giza and Sakkara. Travellers with limited mobility should tell us before the tour so we can explain the access conditions and adjust the pace where possible. Wear light clothing, bring water and leave some room in your schedule for traffic on the return journey to Cairo.

Your Itinerary

We pick you up from your hotel in Cairo and transfer you to the Giza plateau. Your guide begins at the Giza Pyramids, explaining how the royal tombs were built and how the site changed over time. You have time to walk around the viewpoints, take photographs and, if available and chosen separately, enter one of the pyramids. Continue to The Sphinx, where you can see the carved lion body and human head from the viewing area and hear about its place in the Giza complex.

The route then continues south to Sakkara. See The Step Pyramid of Djoser, the earliest large stone pyramid in Egypt, before visiting The Mataba of Kagemni and The Pyramid of King Teti. Your guide points out the painted scenes and pyramid texts where access is open. After the site visit, stop for a typical Egyptian lunch before continuing to Memphis.

At Memphis, the former capital, see The Alabaster sphinx and The Colossi of Ramses the second in the open-air museum. We then drive you back to Cairo and drop you at your hotel after the full-day excursion.
