Description

This 3-day Abu Simbel, Aswan and Luxor tour from Cairo by flight brings together several of Upper Egypt’s major sights without long hours on an overnight train or road journey from the capital. You fly to Aswan, travel in a modern air-conditioned car, then continue north by road to Luxor before flying back to Cairo. Our team arranges the transfers and sightseeing in a sensible order, leaving you to focus on the monuments rather than the logistics between them.

Aswan starts the trip at an easier pace, with the Nile, granite islands and wide desert horizons around the city. On your guided visit, you see Philae Temple, reached by boat on an island in the reservoir. Its courtyards, reliefs and columns were moved to higher ground during the UNESCO rescue campaign that saved the temple from rising water. You also visit the Unfinished Obelisk, where the ancient quarry still shows how workers cut a huge monument from the granite bedrock.

The High Dam explains the area’s modern history. Your guide shows how it changed the Nile’s flow, created Lake Nasser and helped regulate water across much of Egypt. You may also see the Old Dam, built earlier at Aswan’s southern edge. The two structures help explain why Philae was moved and how the landscape around the city changed.

A short sail on a Felucca adds a quieter part to the Aswan visit when river conditions and the programme allow. The traditional boat moves close to the water, with the boatman adjusting the sail as you look across the islands and riverbank. It is a simple outing rather than a long cruise, and our team fits it around the main sightseeing and road transfers.

Abu Simbel temples are the main highlight of the southern route. Cut into the rock during the reign of Ramesses II, the Great Temple has four colossal figures at its entrance. The smaller temple honours Queen Nefertari and the goddess Hathor. Inside, your guide points out the halls, statues and wall scenes that explain the temples’ purpose. Their position beside Lake Nasser also connects the visit with the wider story of the Nubian monuments moved during the dam project.

After Aswan, you drive to Luxor, with time to rest between visits. On the west bank, the Valley of the Kings contains decorated royal tombs cut into the desert hills. The tombs open to visitors can change, and your guide explains which entrances are included that day. Nearby, the temple of Queen Hatshepsut, also spelled Queen Hatsheput, rises in terraces against the cliffs. You then see the Colossi of Memnon, two large seated statues marking the approach to the ancient Theban area.

On the east bank, Karnak Temple is easier to understand with a guide because its vast enclosure was built and expanded by many pharaohs. You walk along the avenue and through the courtyards towards the Great Hypostyle Hall, where enormous columns carry inscriptions and painted details. The visit gives the Luxor section a strong finish, while the organised transfer between the west and east banks removes the need to arrange separate taxis or negotiate timings at each site.

This tour suits travellers who want a concentrated introduction to Aswan and Luxor, including families with older children and adults who prefer guided historical context. It includes flights, early starts, walking over uneven stone, steps and warm outdoor visits, so it is less suitable for anyone needing a fully step-free programme. We use air-conditioned transport for the road sections, coordinate airport and hotel pickups, and keep the itinerary comfortable while fitting the main monuments into three days. Bring sun protection, water and firm-soled footwear; site entry arrangements and flight details are confirmed with you before travel.

Your Itinerary

Your 3-day trip begins with a flight from Cairo to Aswan, followed by a transfer in a modern air-conditioned car. After arrival, our team takes you to the riverside sights in a practical order, starting with the High Dam. From its viewpoint, you can see how the dam changed irrigation, electricity production and the movement of water along the Nile.

Continue to the Old Dam before visiting the Phiala temple on Agilkia Island. A short boat ride brings you across the water to the temple complex, where carved scenes honour Isis and other ancient Egyptian deities. You then see the unfinished Obelisk, left in its quarry when a fault appeared in the stone. Later, Sail with Felucca around the islands and enjoy a slower view of Aswan from the river. The evening is set aside for rest after the flight and sightseeing.

Leave Aswan early for the road journey to the Abu Simbel temples. The drive takes several hours through the desert, so this is an early and full travel day. On arrival, walk towards the two rock-cut temples built during the reign of Ramses II. The larger temple has four colossal seated figures at its entrance, while the smaller temple honours Queen Nefertari and the goddess Hathor.

Allow time to explore the courtyards, halls and wall reliefs before returning by road towards Luxor. The transfer crosses the changing landscape between Upper Egypt’s southern river valley and the area around Luxor. Because the day combines a long excursion with intercity travel, we keep the pace focused and practical, with stops arranged by the driver when suitable. Your arrival in Luxor is later in the day, leaving time to check in and prepare for the following morning’s west-bank visits.

Begin on Luxor’s West Bank at the Valley of the Kings, where royal tombs were cut into the desert hills. Your guide explains the tomb layouts, painted burial scenes and the reasons this valley became a royal cemetery. Continue to Queen Hatsheput temple, built in terraces against the cliffs. The site tells the story of Egypt’s female pharaoh through its colonnades and reliefs.

Before crossing back towards the East Bank, stop at the Colossi of Memnon, two large seated statues that once guarded the entrance to a much larger temple. The final visit is Karnak temple, where pylons, courtyards, obelisks and the Great Hypostyle Hall show the scale of ancient Thebes. After sightseeing, our team arranges your transfer to Luxor Airport for the return flight to Cairo. Keep your passport and flight details accessible during the airport transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions

This 3-day Abu Simbel, Aswan and Luxor trip from Cairo includes domestic flights, transfers, sightseeing by modern air-conditioned car, and visits led by our local team to Aswan, the Abu Simbel temples and Luxor’s main ancient sites. The sightseeing programme includes the Phiala temple, the unfinished Obelisk, the High Dam, the Valley of the Kings, Karnak temple and more.

Check the booking details for the exact inclusions, such as meals, entrance tickets and accommodation, as these can depend on the selected package.

This three-day itinerary is a full sightseeing trip, with the main visits arranged in a practical order across Aswan and Luxor rather than as a slow-paced holiday. You fly from Cairo to Aswan, discover Aswan’s highlights, visit Abu Simbel, travel by road to Luxor, then see the Valley of the Kings, Queen Hatsheput temple, the Colossi of Memnon and Karnak temple.

Expect early starts, walking on uneven ground and time in the vehicle between sites. Our team keeps the schedule organised and can explain the day’s plan as you travel.

Pickup is arranged from your Cairo accommodation or another agreed Cairo location, followed by the domestic flight to Aswan and road transfers in a modern air-conditioned car. After the Aswan visits and Abu Simbel, we drive to Luxor for the final sightseeing before arranging the onward transfer included in your booking.

We confirm the practical meeting details with you before travel. Flight schedules and pickup times can vary, so please provide accurate accommodation and contact information when booking.

Children can usually join this Abu Simbel, Aswan and Luxor tour, while travellers with limited mobility should discuss their needs with us before booking because several temples involve uneven paving, steps and outdoor walking. The High Dam and the old Dam have easier viewing areas, but the ancient sites require more movement.

The itinerary also includes a possible felucca sail, which may require stepping onto a boat from a riverbank. We can advise on the most suitable arrangements when we know the traveller’s mobility level.

Wear light, breathable clothing, comfortable walking shoes and clothing that covers the shoulders and knees when visiting temples and other religious places. Bring sun protection, a hat, sunglasses, water, any required medication and a small bag for the day.

A light layer is useful for the flight, early starts and air-conditioned car. Keep your passport and booking information accessible for the flights and transfers, and bring a camera if you wish to record the Abu Simbel temples and the Nile scenery.

You can request this three-day Egypt tour by submitting your preferred travel dates, Cairo pickup details and traveller information; our team will then confirm the arrangements and availability before booking. We can also clarify the flight, transfer, sightseeing and accommodation details included in your selected option.

Cancellation terms depend on the booking conditions shown for your reservation, particularly because domestic flights and other services may have supplier rules. Review those terms before payment, and contact us if your plans change.

Le voyage était fantastique! Les temples étaient imposants et les paysages magnifiques. La climatisation de la voiture a rendu les trajets agréables, même en plein été. Bien que j'aurais aimé passer plus de temps à chaque site, cela reste une expérience inoubliable.
