Description

Our private Aswan and Abu Simbel 2-day trip from Makadi takes you to Upper Egypt by comfortable private car, with time for Aswan's main sights and the great temples near the Sudanese border. The road journey is long, but spreading the visits over two days is easier than trying to fit everything into one rushed excursion. A guide joins you at the archaeological sites, explains the stories behind the monuments and keeps the route on track.

You begin to discover Aswan beside the Nile, among the granite islands that shape the city. At the High Dam, your guide explains how the structure changed the river, created Lake Nasser and affected communities and ancient sites across Nubia. You also see the old Dam, an earlier engineering project farther along the river. Seeing both dams gives you useful context before the temple visits.

The boat crossing to Philae Island is a memorable part of the day. Philae Temple, also sometimes written as Phiala temple, was moved to higher ground to protect it from rising water and is dedicated mainly to the goddess Isis. Columns, reliefs and gateways come into view as you approach by boat. The setting feels different from a roadside monument, and you have time to walk through the complex with your guide rather than stop only for photographs.

At the Unfinished Obelisk, you see the marks left by ancient stoneworkers in the granite quarry. The huge monument is still attached to the bedrock, showing how cracks could bring a project to a halt before the stone was raised. After the site visits, you can sail with Felucca on the Nile. These traditional open-sailed boats move with the wind, giving you a quiet break from the road and a view of the riverbanks from the water. Sailing time depends on wind and local conditions.

  • Private road transport between Makadi, Aswan and Abu Simbel
  • The High Dam, the old Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk and Philae Temple
  • A felucca sail on the Nile in Aswan
  • A guided visit to the Abu Simbel temples
  • A route that can be planned around your preferred pace and practical needs

The visit to Abu Simbel is the main reason many travellers choose two days. Ramesses II built the temples, which were moved to their present location during the Lake Nasser rescue project. The larger temple has four seated royal figures on its facade, while the nearby temple is dedicated to Queen Nefertari and the goddess Hathor. Inside, the halls and chambers contain carved scenes and painted details. The site is remote, so an organised transfer means you do not have to manage the long drive, directions and entrance arrangements yourself.

Kom Ombo temple and Edfu temple lie on the Nile Valley route between Aswan and Luxor and are not standard visits on this Makadi-to-Aswan and Abu Simbel programme. If you want to add either temple, ask our team before confirming so we can check the route, available daylight and the extra driving involved. Keeping the planned visits focused suits travellers who want Aswan and Abu Simbel without extending the itinerary into a longer Nile Valley tour.

This excursion suits couples, families with older children and private groups who prefer a dedicated vehicle and a flexible pace. It is less suitable for travellers who want a short transfer or find long road journeys difficult. Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring sun protection and carry water for the open archaeological areas. We can discuss mobility needs in advance; Philae includes a boat crossing, and several temple sites have uneven ground and steps. Meals and overnight arrangements follow the option selected for your booking, so our team confirms those details before departure.

Your Itinerary

Your private car collects you in Makadi for the long journey south to Aswan. After arriving, our team takes you to the High Dam, where you can see how the dam created Lake Nasser and changed water management along the Nile. You then continue to the nearby old Dam, built earlier in the twentieth century, before visiting the granite quarries and the Unfinished Obelisk. Your guide explains how ancient stone workers shaped obelisks and why this enormous piece was left in the bedrock.

Next, travel by boat to Agilkia Island for the Phiala temple, dedicated to Isis. The temple walls show scenes of Isis, Osiris and Horus, and the island setting gives the visit a quieter pace after the road journey. The monument was relocated when the original island was threatened by rising water.

Later, Sail with Felucca on the Nile around the islands near Aswan. The wooden sailboat moves with the wind, giving you time to watch the river landscape and villages from the water. After the cruise, we arrange your overnight stay in Aswan and confirm the early departure plan for Abu Simbel.

Leave Aswan early by private car for Abu Simbel. The journey takes several hours across the desert, so an early start allows time to visit the Abu Simbel temples before beginning the long return drive. At the site, see the four seated figures of Ramses II at the Great Temple and the smaller temple dedicated to Queen Nefertari and Hathor. Your guide explains how both monuments were moved to higher ground during the creation of Lake Nasser.

Continue north along the Nile and stop at Kom Ombo temple, an unusual double temple dedicated to Sobek and Horus the Elder. Its reliefs, twin sanctuaries and riverside position make the layout easy to understand during a guided walk. The visit is a useful break after the desert road section.

The final sightseeing stop is Edfu temple, reached before the drive continues towards the Red Sea coast. This well-preserved Ptolemaic temple is dedicated to Horus and has a large pylon, broad courtyard and detailed reliefs. After the visit, we continue by road for your drop-off in Makadi. It is a full day with extended driving, and the exact arrival time depends on road conditions and time spent at each site.

Frequently Asked Questions

This private two-day trip includes pickup from Makadi, road transfers by car, sightseeing in Aswan, a visit to the Abu Simbel temples, and time to see the High Dam, the old Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk and Phiala temple on Philae Island. The programme also includes a Nile felucca sailing experience.

Depending on the agreed route and road conditions, sightseeing may include the Kom Ombo temple and Edfu temple. Entrance tickets, meals and accommodation should be checked in your booking details, as arrangements can vary.

The trip lasts two days and combines long road transfers with guided visits in Aswan and Abu Simbel, so it suits travellers who are comfortable with early starts and a full sightseeing schedule. You will have time to see the main sites, but this is an active excursion rather than a slow city break.

Our team plans the route in a practical order, usually combining the road journey with stops such as Edfu temple or Kom Ombo temple when included. Ask us to confirm the overnight arrangements and detailed timing before booking.

Pickup is arranged from your accommodation in Makadi, followed by private road transfers to Aswan and Abu Simbel in a car with our local team. We confirm the pickup point and departure details after booking, since the exact timing depends on your accommodation and the day’s route.

The return transfer is also arranged as part of the private excursion. Please give us the correct hotel or accommodation details and a reachable contact number so our team can coordinate the pickup clearly.

The trip can suit children who manage long car journeys and early sightseeing starts, while travellers with limited mobility should check the route with us before booking. Visits to the High Dam, the old Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk and Phiala temple involve walking, steps or uneven ground in places.

The felucca ride also requires getting on and off a traditional boat, and access at Abu Simbel may involve walking across open paths. Tell us about mobility needs, a stroller or young children in advance so we can explain the practical conditions.

Wear light, comfortable clothing and supportive walking shoes, and bring sun protection, a hat, sunglasses, water and any medication you need. Modest clothing is suitable for visiting temples, while a light layer can help during early road transfers and cooler periods.

Bring your passport or required identification, booking details and a camera if you wish. For the Sail with Felucca experience, secure footwear and a light jacket are useful because conditions on the Nile can feel cooler than on land.

You can request the two-day trip through A1 Toureg by providing your preferred date, accommodation details and the number of travellers; our team then confirms the arrangements and availability. We also clarify what is included, including tickets, meals, accommodation and any planned stops before payment.

Cancellation and amendment terms depend on the booking conditions shown for your reservation. Contact us as soon as your plans change so we can explain the applicable terms and check whether the date or route can be adjusted.
