The most-travelled route (the Steps of Repentance — 3,750 steps) is moderately challenging. The summit is at 2,285 metres and the pre-dawn climb takes 2 to 3 hours. Fit adults and older children (12+) can manage it. The reward — watching sunrise over the Sinai mountains — is extraordinary. Camels are available for part of the ascent.
St. Catherine's Monastery is among the oldest continuously inhabited Christian monasteries in the world, dating back to the 6th century. It is home to the Burning Bush of Moses, a remarkable library of ancient manuscripts, and a priceless collection of Byzantine icons. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Key items include warm layers (the summit is very cold before dawn even in summer), a torch or headlamp, sturdy comfortable walking shoes or boots, sunscreen, a hat, plenty of water, and energy snacks. A small backpack is ideal. Camera and extra batteries recommended for the sunrise shots.
