Description

El Quseir know as the white Harbour, During Ptolemaic times, El Quseir was the end the desert route from Caravans crossing the Wadi Hammamat. Later the City was fortified by Sultan Selim, Until the later century .it was the starting Point for pilgrims traveling to Mecca, Today It is a Narrow, Streets are lined with Colorful bazaar with a distinct Bedouin flavor, Shopping in El Quseir is infinitely more interesting with a great deal of choice and competition. There are also food markets where it's fascinating to watch the locals shop. If you want to shop for food in the market it's useful to learn the Arabic numbers as this will often help you know the price as it's often written on a card above the produce along with the Arabic for Kilo. Their numbers for two and three are very similar when handwritten so you have to look carefully. You can also watch to see what someone else pays. And if the trader asks for a little more because you are a tourist then perhaps you will be anyway willing to pay although some will happily give you the produce at the correct price. El Quseir has vast markets for souvenirs and traditional clothing, papyrus, pottery, alabaster statues, leather goods and fake designer goods (watches, bags, clothing etc). The choice in El Quseir is a lot better than in the hotels -(Where the shop owners have to ask high prices to cover their high rent. This occurs because hotel owners assume (possibly correctly) that tourists trapped in a resort with no competing shops outside will be forced to accept high prices.)- and it's located only about 80km north of the airport. It also has a quaint fishing harbor and compact old town which are very pleasant to wander around. Most of the souvenir shops are located in Sharia Gumhuriya which runs by the Ottoman castle and through the center of town.
