Description

El Quseir, referred to as the white Harbour, served during Ptolemaic times as the endpoint of the desert route taken by caravans crossing the Wadi Hammamat. Later the town was fortified under Sultan Selim, and until recent centuries it acted as a departure point for pilgrims heading to Mecca. Nowadays it features narrow streets lined with a colorful bazaar carrying a distinct Bedouin character, and shopping in El Quseir proves endlessly more engaging thanks to a wide range of choice and competition. El Quseir hosts extensive markets offering souvenirs and traditional garments, papyrus, pottery, alabaster figures, and leather items (watches, bags, clothing etc). Most souvenir shops sit along Sharia Gumhuriya, which passes by the Ottoman castle and runs through the town center.
