Your Marsa Alam guide collects you from your hotel by Marsa Alam tours, then the drive begins toward Dendera temple covering 360 km in total — Marsa Alam to Safaga is 220 km, then a further 160 km to Dendera, with a stop in the desert along the way
2) Discovering the Dendera temple
You'll reach Dendera around 08: 00, with an Egyptologist guide on hand to unfold the temple's story Dendera temple
The Temple of Hathor took shape mostly during the Late Ptolemaic era, under Ptolemy XII and Cleopatra VII, with later Roman-period additions. Despite being commissioned by a dynasty of non-native rulers, its layout mirrors that of other classical Egyptian temples, save for the hypostyle hall's front, credited by an inscription above the entrance to Emperor Tiberius.
Beyond this, the temple grounds feature scenes depicting the Ptolemaic rulers. One striking example: a massive relief carved into an exterior wall shows Cleopatra VII alongside her son by Julius Caesar and co-regent, Ptolemy XV, better known as Caesarion. Both figures appear in Egyptian dress, making offerings.
Hathor's reputation as a healing deity is reflected in the sanatorium found within the complex, where pilgrims once sought her cure. Sacred water, blessed by pouring it over inscribed statues, was used in bathing rituals; priests distributed ointments; and sleeping chambers accommodated those hoping the goddess would visit their dreams and offer guidance.
