Luxor Day Trip from Safaga by Private Car

Your first visit is the Valley of the Kings, a desert necropolis where pharaohs of the New Kingdom were buried in rock-cut tombs. Rather than seeing a single open-air monument, you walk into the hillside and explore decorated passages leading to underground burial chambers. Your guide points out painted scenes, hieroglyphs and details that explain how the tombs were prepared for the afterlife.

Depending on the entrance ticket arrangements, you can also enter the Tomb of young Pharaoh Tutankhamun. The burial chamber is smaller than many royal tombs, but its wall paintings and connection with the famous discovery make it an important part of the visit. The ground is uneven in places, and the descent can be warm, so take your time and follow your guide’s advice about walking safely inside the tombs.

Continue by private car to the Hatshepsut temple, built against the cliffs on Luxor’s west bank. Its broad terraces rise in levels above the approach, connected by ramps and framed by colonnades. As you walk through the site, your guide explains how Hatshepsut presented her rule through temple reliefs, royal images and scenes linked to trade and temple ceremonies.

The visit involves walking across open stone courtyards, with limited shade on some sections. Pause beneath the colonnades to study the carved walls before continuing towards the upper terrace, where the temple’s position beside the limestone cliffs becomes clear. The guide keeps the pace private and flexible, allowing time for photographs while also helping you avoid the hottest parts of the walk where possible.

Before leaving the west bank, stop at the Colossi of Memnon, two enormous seated statues that once guarded the entrance to a much larger temple complex. The figures face towards the Nile and are easy to view from the open site, making this a short but worthwhile stop after the longer visits earlier in the morning. After lunch, cross to Luxor’s east bank for Karnak temple, the largest temple complex in Luxor. Your guide sets the monuments in context, showing how successive pharaohs expanded the complex over many centuries.

There is a good deal to see, so the route is taken at a steady pace rather than rushed. You can focus on the main courtyards and columned hall, while your guide points out inscriptions, sacred spaces and the alignment of the complex. Much of the site is outdoors, and the stone surfaces can be hot, so comfortable footwear, water and sun protection will make the afternoon easier.

Once the Luxor visits are complete, meet your driver at the agreed pickup point and begin the private return transfer to Safaga. Your guide can use the drive to answer final questions about the monuments and suggest other places to visit in Egypt. The route follows the same general desert road back towards the Red Sea coast.

The return journey takes several hours and arrival time depends on the road conditions, traffic and the time spent at each stop.
